FAQ's

My child is still in diapers, how do you handle that?
Little Lights Christian Preschool recommends that children be potty trained upon entering our three year old preschool program. We are aware that this is not always possible and will contact the child’s parent or parent designated caregiver to come to the school to change the child if the child has an accident. This can be done on premises in a private bathroom and the child can then return to class . Newly trained children sometimes have “toileting accidents”. Staff members reassure the child that everyone has accidents sometimes and will help the child to change into spare clothing. We ask parents to send in extra clothing to keep at school so that parents do not have to return home before coming to change their child. We also have our own supply of extra clothing available. I'm not sure if my two year old is ready to separate, which class should I register for?
If your child has never been in a group situation before, and tends to cling to you around other people, it is best to start with either a Mommy & Me class or a Slow Separation class. Many parents find that one semester of a Mommy & Me class, followed by one semester of a Slow Separation class, gently prepares their child for nursery school.Back To Top...

What is the difference between a Mommy & Me and Slow Separation class?
Our Mommy & Me classes have two teachers and approximately 8 children and 8 moms (or dads, grandparents, babysitters, etc.). The parents stay in the room the entire time, and participate with their child. The parent is as much a participating member of the class as the child is. Parents join in with music, arts & crafts and circle time. They join their child on the playground or in the gym.
In our Slow Separation classes, parents step back and allow the children to depend on the teachers to meet their needs. Classes have two teachers and approximately eight children. The children go to the playground or gym, and leave their parents in the classroom. After playground they return to the classroom and rejoin their parents. The separation time increases slowly, until parents are out of the room for the entire class!Back To Top...

What if my child cries the first day?
This is not uncommon. In our Learn & Play Nursery, Pre-school and Pre-Kindergarten classes, most children are ready to separate after a few weeks. On the first day of class in September, all of our classes have an orientation during which the parents stay for the entire classes. Classes are shortened for this day. After that day each Learn & Play Nursery and Preschool class will have a third teacher for the first three full class sessions, this allows us to spend more time getting to know the children individually and thus create the bond necessary for successful separation. We are always happy to work with our families in any way that we can, to allow for a successful first school experience for your child. Each child’s separation process will be addressed individually by the teacher and family creating a plan that works best for the child.Back To Top...

My three year old is not yet ready to separate. Should I start them in a Slow Separation class?
In this situation, we like to meet the child so we can decide together what would be best for them. Our goal is to have three year olds in a Preschool class with other children their age. Within a few weeks, most three year olds are ready to separate. As the child bonds with the teachers, and becomes familiar with the routine, and their fellow classmates. However, sometimes a child is really not ready to be in a group without their parent. In these cases, we recommend that the child start in a Slow Separation class so they can learn to separate at slower pace. If a child is not yet comfortable in a group setting, it may be necessary to start in a Mommy & Me class. At Little Lights Christian Preschool, we want your child’s first school experience to be a positive one. We look at each child as an individual, with individual needs. Their birth date is only one factor in the equation.Back To Top...

What if someone else comes to pick up my child?
Before a child starts school, parents are required to fill out a Student Release form. This lists the names of people that are permitted to pick up their child. When someone other than the regular parent comes to pick up the child, they must produce a picture identification which matches the name listed by the child’s parents. The person then signs the child out with the child’s teacher.Back To Top...

Parents will be provided with additional release forms by the classroom teacher for a one time pickup or play date release.
